1 - Introduction

The Name / Registration # filter is used to select a group of animals matching a word or words entered into the textbox. The filter actually has 2 parts: one to select the search type and the other for entry of a search string. This filter is used on many of the search pages. The values you select for search type and string will be remembered for your current browser session and populate this filter in any other pages this filter appears.

2 - Search Type Dropdownlist

You have three choices in this dropdownlist. Only one can be selected at a time.

2.1 - Name Starts With

A search of this type will match animals whose name starts with the string in the search string textbox. This is commonly used to find all animals with a particular herd name.

Example:

The string "Redwood" will match:

and others

2.2 - Name Contains

A search of this type will match any animals that contain the string in the search string textbox anywhere in the registered name.

Example:

A search string of "cane" will match:

and others

2.3 - Registration #

A search of this type will find any animals that contain the string in the search string textbox anywhere in the registration number.

Example:

A search string of "4556" will match:

and others

3 - Search String Textbox

You may enter any alphanumeric or punctuation character into the search string textbox up to a maximum of 30 characters. Generally, the more you type into the textbox, the more specific the search and the smaller the results.

There is one special case. The hyphen(-) character will always be automatically replaced with an underscore which is a single character wildcard. This is done for the cases where multi-word herd names were changed by ADGA to replace the space with some other character, usually the hyphen or asterisk. This has the result of returning both hyphenated and non-hyphenated versions of the herd name in one pass (ie Redwood-Hills with "Name Starts With" will return both Redwood-Hills and Redwood Hills).
